Meccan
Surah 1 of 114
Overview
Surah Al-Fatiha is the first chapter of the Quran and is known as "The Opening." It is the most recited surah in Islam, as it is a mandatory part of every unit (rak'ah) of the daily prayers. This surah encapsulates the entire message of the Quran in seven concise verses.
Themes
The surah begins with praise of Allah as the Lord of all worlds, the Most Merciful and Most Compassionate. It acknowledges Allah as the Master of the Day of Judgment. The central declaration is in verse 5: "You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help." The surah concludes with a prayer for guidance to the straight path — the path of those whom Allah has blessed, not those who earned His anger or went astray.
Significance
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "No prayer is valid without the recitation of Al-Fatiha" (Sahih al-Bukhari 756). It is also known as Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book), As-Sab' al-Mathani (The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses), and Ash-Shifa (The Cure).
