Overview
Surah Al-Baqarah is the longest chapter of the Quran with 286 verses. It was revealed in Madinah and addresses the newly established Muslim community with comprehensive guidance on law, worship, and social conduct.
Themes
The surah covers a vast range of topics: the nature of guidance and misguidance, the story of Adam, the history of the Children of Israel, the change of the Qiblah from Jerusalem to Makkah, laws of fasting, Hajj, marriage, divorce, trade, and debt. It contains Ayatul Kursi (2:255), one of the most powerful verses in the Quran, and concludes with a beautiful prayer for forgiveness.
Significance
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed, Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited" (Sahih Muslim 780). The last two verses of this surah were given to the Prophet during the Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj).
